About this QR code

A QR code that starts a call

A phone QR code uses the standard tel format. A phone that scans it shows the number and offers to call, so nobody has to read digits off a sign and type them in.

The phone never dials by itself. The person has to confirm the call, and the number you enter is stored in the code and nowhere else.

If you would prefer a written message to a spoken call, an SMS QR code opens a text with the number already filled in.

Where it is used

Where phone codes are useful

Shop windows and vehicles. People walking or driving past can call your business without writing anything down.

Property and for-sale signs. A code beside the agent name opens a call to the right number.

Lost-and-found tags. On a pet tag or a bag label, a code can lead to a contact number. Use a number you are comfortable sharing.

Flyers and posters. A call code is easier to act on than a number in small print, especially for a tradesperson or a taxi service.

Reception and help desks. Place a code on a door or a notice to reach the person on duty.

Saving a full contact. To store a name, email and address as well, a contact card QR code does more.

How to use it

Three simple steps

1. Enter the number

Type it however you normally write it. Spaces, brackets and dashes are removed for you.

2. Add the country code

Start with + and the country code when the code will be seen outside your own country.

3. Download and test

Save the code and scan it. Confirm the phone offers to call the number you expected.

The details

How the number is written

The code stores a tel link: the digits, with a plus sign in front if you typed one. Formatting such as spaces, dots, dashes and brackets is stripped, because a phone dials only the digits. The tool accepts numbers of 3 to 15 digits, which covers full international numbers and short service codes.

Including the country code is the single most useful habit. A number written +1 555 010 0199 works from anywhere, while one without the code only works for callers in the same country. Landlines, mobiles and toll-free numbers all work the same way.

Extensions and pauses are not supported by this format, so a number that needs an extension should be printed next to the code in plain text.

The font caption

A caption that invites the call

Under the code, a caption like “Call us” or “Scan to call” makes the purpose obvious. Pick a typeface from the ProFont font library that fits your sign, and the caption is added to the PNG you download. The SVG contains the code only.

A call-to-action caption works best in a bold, condensed face that stays legible on a shop window. Three to try:

Questions

phone QR code FAQ

Will the phone call automatically after scanning?

No. It shows the number and asks the person to confirm before dialing.

Do I need to include the country code?

Only if people from other countries might scan it. A code with the country code works from anywhere.

Can I include an extension?

No. The format cannot carry extensions or pauses. Print the extension next to the code.

Does it work with landlines and toll-free numbers?

Yes. The code stores digits, and the phone dials whatever number it is.

What is the difference between this and a contact card code?

This one starts a call. A contact card saves a whole person, with name, email, address and more, into the phone.
